3. Why the Rumkale Project ?
Even though our country is one of the luckiest countries of the world about historical values, we are not that lucky on protecting these values. The outside towers of Rumkale, which has survived since the 9th century BC has been destroyed and people have built houses using those rocks of the towers and the castle has been used as a pasture for the sheep. People lived there till 1990 but then people just abandoned the houses n the castle as the Birecik Dam was built. We saw that Rumkale was ruined and neglected in the trip we had on 7 November 2004.
With this project, we aimed to draw the attention of NGOs, municipality, governorship, and the ministries and other local and national decision-maker to the historical and environmental values of the area. Then, by this way, we wanted to find a solution to the transportation problem of Rumkale. We thought that this project would open the way to us to find some solutions to the problem and by overcoming the problem of transportation, there would be a progress to affect the local people and the area and there would be more tourists.
